New Balance RunIQ Android Wear smartwatch unveiled (finally)

A year after the sports shoe company announced it was making an Android Wear smartwatch for runners, the New Balance RunIQ finally has a name and we now have some details of what we can expect from the Polar M600 rival.

The Intel-powered RunIQ is set to be available in black with a grey face and swappable watch bands. It features a 1.39-inch AMOLED display, built-in GPS, a heart rate monitor, lap button and a 4GB music player letting your pair Bluetooth buds directly to the watch. It’s also waterproof up to 5 ATM so you can take it for a dip in the pool as well.

It’s set to run on the latest version of Android Wear which probably explains the delay. Android Wear 2.0 will give you the standard notification support, Google Now integration, the ability to sync music over Google Play and will work with new standalone apps. New Balance is also teaming up with Strava to make it easier to upload and share workouts with GPS tracking letting you record routes, pace and distance.

The partnerships don’t end there as Jabra is launching a pair of $109.99 PaceIQ wireless sports headphones (pictured in the main image) that are optimised to work with the RunIQ watch and feature a dedicated Sports button to deliver real-time audio in-ear coaching.

In terms of battery life, you can expect the New Balance RunIQ watch to manage up to 24 hours on one charge and up to 5 hours when you’re making use of GPS and heart rate monitoring. So it’ll last a marathon, but it falls well short of the kind of stamina you’ll get from a dedicated GPS running watch from Garmin and Polar.

The RunIQ is available to pre-order from 4 January priced at $299.99 and it will be available to buy from 1 February. That’s a little cheaper than the Polar M600, our current sporty Android Wear favourite. The PaceIQ smart earphones also go on sale on 1 February. Stay tuned for our hands-on look at both from the CES show floor.
